We've done this before haven't we?  As a long time fan when I saw the dates initially announced for the tour I started to wonder "How will this be".  Advertised as a best of tour I had to say my interest was piqued.  Echo and the Bunnymen have long been on my Mt. Rushmore of bands (from that era).  It was a good excuse to go, and I was able to muster up some friends to come along.  As an added bonus I grabbed hard tickets at the venue box office w/no fees. Read that again, no fees and hard tickets?  

Admittedly I was curious so I was checking out live videos of full shows.  I was checking on set lists (no changes, but I also expected that).  Many of the videos have been pulled whether or not the band was on or off.  First, I need to say the "BAND" was never off.  Holy smokes.  The Bunnymen were a classic four piece.  I get it., but when you "fill out the sound" all is forgiven.  Singer Ian McCulloch and guitarist Will Sergeant are the original members with four additional musicians to support.  

The shows had been up and down in reading.  Either fans were noting "nothings really changed, Ian mumbles, we had to sing a lot more than we thought, Ian sits down etc".  Then there were reviews like "wow they look and sound great"  So, we had to roll the dice, had no idea what to expect I guess.

To add, just a few nights before Ian was involved in an accident that resulted in the postponement and rescheduling of a tour stop.  So would we have "that" to possibly deal with, but the show went on as planned.

Taking the stage about 930 the band started off with "Going Up" and "All that Jazz".  Casual fans might have been wondering "isn't this a hits tour" but to the bands defense these two songs often seem to open shows and have been in the set list for a long long time.  It seemed to get a bit more rowdy when "Heads Will Roll" took off and I started to exhale.  "We got the good version of Ian tonight!"

Alas.

The set continued.  Ian would speak now and then, but nobody seems to understand a word he says.  Lots of speculation on substance issues, or the accident would come to mind.  Then the band would take off on "Seven Seas" or "Rescue" and all would be forgiven.  They "sounded" excellent.

By the time we got to Villiers Terrance Ian was seated.  He'd remain on the stool moving forward.  Some reports I read noted Ian said something about the accident and needing to sit down.  The booze was moved next to him and we continued on.  Ian never removed the sunglasses and seemed to plod along.  I read a great line about how this should be Will Sergeants victory lap, but Ian seems to sabotage things.

Still, they "sounded" good but it just watching someone in a continual state of decline.  Bring on the Dancing Horses and then in to the Killing Moon were great set closers.  The band, historically, would leave the stage after The Killing Moon and come back for two.  Ian called an audible and I thought "oh we are going to get a set change!".  Nope, it was just Ian not wanting to leave the stage before Lips Like Sugar.  Well, we got that THEN Ian and the band left the stage.

The crowd started to head towards the door and the band did return for the song "Ocean Rain" and this is where, if you've heard anything about this show, it "went down".   Apparently there were some talkers down front.  Ian spoke to them, even saying something like "will throw you out. And give your money back" and they continued.  Then, it seemed to happen again.  Ian got upset, called the person(s) a name, and walked off.  In the video (its been pulled) you could see Will sort of "shrug".  Curious how things went down backstage.

Its caused debates on both sides.  Talkers are annoying, but also as the artist, can you power through?  Even if you had to remove them, stop the song and start all over?  Not sure, but the "walk off" was, admittedly crappy.

All in all it was better than I expected, but since I've realized the band is in a tough spot.  Can they continue with Ian seemingly put off by it all.  Couple that with the wildly publicized drinking (and sadly drug) use one needs to wonder.  Hopefully not, but in their own words "Nothing Lasts Forever..."

Support - Dead Gowns

In recent weeks Caspian had a lot of great updates for fans, with glimpses of them working in the studio. A few months ago the band announced they were returning to Dunk!festival and then soon after a "one off/warm up" gig at Portland House of Music.  A quick look at the calendar showed it as a Thursday...but....I thought I could pull it off.  Reached out to some like minded local fans and had a bite.  I was able to have a wing person!  I then reached out to a former co-worker who had moved back to Maine and he and his wife also decided to join.  Neither of them had seen the band so this was a thrill!  (I'll omit names and provide initials for now)

Left my home and connected with "W" just over the border in New Hampshire.  The drive continued and we then connected with J+A.  J had asked me earlier if I wanted to do much and I said that due to the time and distance a simple "burger and beer pre-show" would be fine.  We arrived and had plenty of time so J took  me to a Bullmoose location and I combed the bins for a little bit.  Something I enjoy and they were gracious w/their time but it was then time to "get closer to the venue".  We parked and headed to dinner.  After that it was back to the car to grab sweat shirts and we walked, I'd say it was under a 10 minute walk.  Very cool to be in a place where people are comfortable and before you know it we were ready to walk in.

The hall is a cool space.  We walked in and were "elevated" above the stage.  We were early enough so we decided this was the spot we were going to hang out at.

Dead Gowns was the support and I admit I didn't know anything about them.  What I did learn its largely a project by Genevieve Beaudoin.  It was a solo, acoustic set.  The crowd grew and were respectful as she worked through her 35-40 minute set.

Caspian hit the stage right at 9pm.  The band was in it usual layout (facing stage)  Jonny (guitar) to the left, then Jani (bass), Justin (drums) in the middle back, Phil (guitar) and Cal guitar.

Stating out with The Dove->ASA the build was steady.  Knowing this was going to be a warm up gig for the Dunk!Fest I felt we were going to get some standards the band performs.  This is a good thing.  They had not performed live in over 150 days.  Any "rust" was shaken off quickly.  The set proceeded with "Halls of Summer" and "Malacoda". The band was locked in and did have some what of a light show to go along with the songs to further set the mood.  We got "Of Foam and Wave" as song that I felt they had abandoned for a while (and was right)  It's great to hear.  Up next was "Division Blues" and Phil spoke for the first time.  He let us know they had wrapped the up the recording of the record (no news on release date) but that was wonderful to hear.  We got the recording of "Bluebird" that always hits me and then it took of in to "Gone in Bloom and Bough".  We've been spoiled with a saxophone breakdown of this a few times (there was not tonight) and they gave a heavy version as always.  

"Arcs of Command" followed and this song very well could be a closer, but nope....we put it in the set to punch you hard.  A song they should never ever stop playing.  We got the "new song" song.  I was lucky to heard it back in November of 2025 at Sonia in Cambridge MA.  Phil shouted "we need a name so let us know".  Per band sources back in November it was a working title of "Burnt Reynolds".  The song really is a clean and almost joyful tone.  I don't want to say "bouncing" but the song has a few parts where the band locks in to a groove.  They don't fly all over the stage, but they still hammer down hard.  I really look forward to the direction they are going if the record follows suit.  I also notice the band "smiling" when they play this song.  It is refreshing to see them get such a charge out of what "new" things they can  bring.

The band ended with "Castles High, Marble Bright".  I told J+A (again, first timers) "if you don't' get this song...you won't get Caspian".  Happy to report they got it.

Show was over about 10:15pm.  No encore (seems to historically the norm for them which is fine).

Support - The Head & The Heart

What a show.

Wow.

I will admit I am fairly new to her music.  I did buy the record "In these Silent Days" (which is/was her seventh album) and really liked it, my wife did too.  When the new album came out "Returning to Myself" I did something I haven't done in a while it seems for a "bigger" act...bought it day it came out.

Her appearances on Saturday Night Live, Howard Stern as well as seemingly "everywhere" (this is a good thing) I decided to get tickets for my wife for Christmas.  I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention the music with the Highwomen

The ride to the city was fine and we settled in to our balcony seats shortly after The Head and the Heart took the stage.  I am unfamiliar with them as well but really enjoyed the set.  The energy was great and I will for sure "look further" into them.

Brandi, who is on just the second night of her very first arena tour began the evening with "Returning to Myself" where she was behind a curtain.  It was a very neat "haunting" feel to it.  The set really takes off and she is quick to get around the stage and engage.  The stories in between songs were all great.  I know sometimes you get that whole "shut up and sing" thing going on with bands, but these all pulled us in.  When she did "Swing for the Fences" a song she did with Elton John (she also did "Who Believes in Angels") she spoke of her fandom, what it was like to work with him and his presence.  She is a great story teller.  

A fun part of the show she noted they had tried the show before was to make a bigger space a little more "small" and they did audience requests.  Brandi was flanked by "the Twins", her long time band mates and collaborators Phil and Tim Hanseroth.  This was really fun.  The first one requested was "Downpour".  It was a hit.  The second was taken from a fan a little further back and "up" who requested "Wherever is your Heart".  What I loved about this tune was Brandi laughs in agreement and then calls out (I am paraphrasing) "Any acoustic open tuning capo 1"  I was impressed she didn't appear to need a teleprompter and both songs were excellent.  Really made me realized I had missed out not seeing her years ago.

The show needs to also mention her band, all terrific and "SistaStrings" Chauntee and Monique Ross, who sing, dance, are tremendous musicians and add to the overall awesomeness of the night.  They were so great when they were able to step forward, and Brandi is very good about having everyone called out and recognized.

I left incredibly pleased.  It is not my usual go to for music, but my goodness is she talented and seems to genuinely enjoy what she is able to do.

Support Bands:  Restless Spirit, Earthlore

Wednesday night was one for the ages.  I've been lucky to have the ability to see a lot of shows.  This fall I will hit my 40th year of attending shows.  I will always find something to like about the live events I do attend, but now and again and event really stands out.

This was one of them.

An all timer.

Sweden band Truckfighters kicked off their US Tour, albeit a short tour Wednesday to a ravenous crowd.  Ozo (Oskar Cedermalm)  is the bassist in the band, one of the founding  members and guitarist Dango (Niklas Källgren) the other.  They have swapped out drummers but the ferocity of their live shows does not begin to tell the story.

Having been around since 2001 and releasing five studio albums the band has rolled members, taken a hiatus and even at the start of this tour noted it was the  last batch of shows on their current visa.  Touring in the US is getting harder and harder.

The show began with a full recorded version of "Alterd State" before Dango arrived on stage, getting everyone riled up before tossing his shirt in to the audience.

We were underway.

Three songs came from the debut, but it ran through their discography.  

This show was everything you'd want.  A ravenous (and respectful) fan base.  Dango hardly standing still...he gives any/all guitar players a run for their money with enthusiasm.  He was in the crowd even.  It was such an electric show, you could not stop watching them.  Here are a few shots I took:

A little note on the passing of Mike Peters.

 

This might be a little long…but it must be done.

Tuesday April 29^th was like any other day.  I got in to work, turned on computer and set up for another day.

Then I got a text from a buddy with an article… “Mike Peters: The Alarm singer dies aged 66”.

I didn’t even click it.  I did not need to.  The wind was taken out of my sails.  Mike, and the band have been a part of my life for over 40 years. 

Decided to put down a little history to help me both cope and memorialize a band and person that shaped my music direction that stands to this day.

To begin I am the youngest of three.  My oldest brother was the one that introduced me to the Alarm.  I was starting to get in to U2 and the Alarm was gaining traction, as a poorly labeled “poor mans U2”.  With the wild hair, and acoustic guitars it wasn’t like anything I had been listening to, or been exposed to at the time.

I was able to see the Alarm live a few times and that is where I want to go for the bulk of this eulogy.

The beginning:  A lot had to do with MTV.  If you are of a certain age, you realize the importance of this cable channel.  My first memory of is “The Stand”  video.  Also, for those local to Boston I am pretty sure I saw the video a few times on the short lived V66.

Slowly started to noticed some kids in school “knew who they were” and celebrated the video alongside me.

At some point, being only slightly artistic, I decided I wanted to put the poppy flower logo on the back of my jean jacket.  Thank to my mom for being into sewing/fabric etc I got got  a piece of fabric slightly larger than the large area on the back of the jacket (was better to fold under to sew don’t you know).  So I had that together and mom sewed it on and off I went.  I wonder where that coat ended up?  I am sure I’d be the “fat guy in a little coat” these days but I still can see it vividly in my mind.

Was able to see them five times.  The first was May 6, 1986 at the Orpheum Theater.  Still to this day one of my all-time favorite shows.  Have a look at the set list and tell me I am off on this…

April 26, 1988 the band played the Wang Theater.  It was broadcast on WBCN and later released as “Electric Folklore Live”.  Once again, stunning show and during Rescue Me Mike went in to the audience for an absolutely stunning version.  Setlist is here.

Third time was back at the Orpheum.  This was December 16, 1989.  The setlist is not super available it seems, but the band had taken to doing a cover of Neil Youngs “Rockin in the Free World” as well as “War is Over” from John Lennon.

We went shockingly “smaller” the next time with two night at the Paradise Rock Club.  This was on the “Raw” tour and the band was close to coming apart.  This was May 1, 1991.  I wasn’t even 21 yet, but I recall two things.  One, being VERY close to the stage.  The closest I had been to the Alarm up to that point.  I also was wearing my jean jacket with the alarm logo on the back and had a few people comment on it.  That was a thrill.

September 16, 2010 this new (to me) version of the Alarm played Showcase Live in Foxboro MA.  It had been a LONG time since I had seen the band live, and Mike was doing various projects at the time, including keeping the Alarm “relevant”.  It was a terrific show and shot them back in to the “can’t miss” segment for me.  I was happy I got to meet Mike after the show.  He signed my CD and posed for a picture.  Gracious…and a total thrill.  Here is one of the many shots I took that evening.





The final time I saw Mike was at Firehouse 13 in Providence RI on September 16, 2016.    On this tour Mike was doing the Alarms famous UCLA show from 1986 that was shown on MTV.  It was Mike with a guitar, a kickdrum and some backing track.  Now before you get worked up….it 100% worked.  They even did the Martha Quinn intro.  It was an absolute blast.  I mean watch the show to give you an idea…the SAME ENGERY in about a 150 capacity venue.  Watch the MTV segment  

There was going to be that “one more time”. Some high school friends and I were going to go see them at a small club in Boston.  It was going to be a celebration in more ways that one. As we get older, schedules change and availability is precious, but we were all locked in.  We even made it a point to “get in the city early to have dinner to extend the time together”.  Sadly, Mike fell ill and the tour was postponed, then cancelled.

Mikes wife Jules provided dozens of updates on Mike via Facebook posts.  All the while Mike was positive as possible, despite being visibly exhausted.

Thank you for the music, the memories, the friendships formed.  You touched me personally and I am forever grateful.

Acid Mothers Temple – October 18, 2024  Alchemy (1^st time)
Interesting, 3 of my favorite shows of the year were at this venue.  There are many factors that add to seeing a show there.  Free and easy parking, not being too long of a drive (I did all three of these shows solo) and the ability to get as close as you can to the stage.  Like all other bands at least 2 members seem to be around the merch pre show, and all go there post show.  Acid Mothers Temple is a band that I have been chasing for YEARS.  They delivered such a sonic/psychedelic show.  My goodness, please come back.

Show Highlight(s): Just the fact these guys are such legends (to me) have killer merch and just were everything I hoped for.  I really hope they come back again.

Slift  October 23, 2024  Brighton Music Hall  (1^st time)
Keeping with the loud and psychedelic Slift blew the doors off the place.  What a great show.  The fact these guys really don’t engage the audience is kinda cool.  Odd how sometimes you want that, other times you don’t.

Sturgill Simpson November 24, 2024  MGM Music Hall 
Ummm yeah. 3hrs no encore, some crazy good covers.  Sturgill is an amazing guitarist.  Another “yeah this is a top 5 show of the year”.  He continues to grow on me and I am “getting” it more and more with each listen.  Immense talent that really can’t be missed

Show Highlight(s): The fact he played for over 3 hours just about non stop.  The “oddball” covers that seemed to work.

The Jesus Lizard – December 13, 2024  Roadrunner Boston
If you were ever to take someone to a rock show that had never been to one, this would the band to see.  For me it’s what a rock show should be.  Loud, rowdy and just electric.  No frills, just four guys bringing the heat.  David Yow was in the audience from the opening notes and he returned a few times.  The band is tight and you get what you get.  If it was your first rock concert ever, you saw one for the ages.

Show Highlight(s):  David Yow with his quirky “Hello..insert wrong city here..” Also his efforts to continually connect with the audience.

Weirdest show – Pentagram String Band  feel free to ask me about it.  I'd see them again, but it was a total whim for me.
Coolest Venue – A friends home for Honeysuckle

Legends I saw in 2024 – Rolling Stones (my first time) and Iron Maiden and I guess you can add Pearl Jam too.  All three were good, fun and entertaining.

I also need to toss in “Dead Letter Office” an REM tribute band that played at the Met in Pawtucket (8/17/24) 35 song set, no opener a short set break.  Just an absolute blast of a show and I realized how much REM music is and was a part of my musical identity.

Fantastic Cat – June 27 The Met Pawtucket RI (1^st time)
I need to admit this is was of the top five shows of the year.  I had read about these guys, poked around a little and fell in love with their cover of Warren Zevon’s “Keep me in your Heart”.  They were so so fun, funny, and great to watch.  I got the cover too (and others).  They played again in MA a few weeks ago and I just couldn’t swing it.  I know I’ll kick myself, but this setting was so very perfect for this show.  Please watch/listen: Keep My In Your Heart and or Band on The Run.  Just the fact their debut album is called "The Very Best of Fantastic Cat" gives you an idea.

The Atomic Bitchwax  Alchemy Providence(1^st time)
Three guys. Orange Amps and no frills rock and roll.  Ripping show/set.  Favorite part of this show, with all due respect to the band, was not about what happened on stage.  The venue has a low stage and there was a Dad and his son.  The son was maybe 12?  He stood right front/center and RAGED the whole show.  He knew the words and was getting hi-fives from everyone.  He got a set list and picks.  Talk about memories being made and a fan for life.  They are killer live.  They basically did this set verbatim. It was released on physical media and is/was probably my most played cd when I was out in the convertible this summer.  Great “road rock”.

Goose September 2, 2024  MGM Fenway
This band is just going to get bigger.  Mark my words.  Your kid brother/sister are gonna pass you on this one.  Get in while the getting’ is good.  They are a talented group of performers.
This is a clip from Philadelphia in June of 2024.  The track is Tumble  and it rules.  I had hoped they’d play if for us in Boston…and they did.  It too was awesome.  This is a song I’d send to anyone that is wondering what Goose is all about.  If you get a little impatient scroll to about the 16-minute mark, turn it up and sit back.  Seriously…either you are gonna get it, or you are not going to get it.  It’s okay if you don’t get it, but your wrong. (I kid)

Peter Hook September 3, 2024  Paradise.
Saw him a few years ago in the same venue.  Knocked my socks off.  I mean who the hell needs New Order?  Performed both Joy Division AND New Order Substance albums IN FULL?  Screw the stand around New Order blokes and stick with this. 

Show Highlight(s): The fact he brings it, every single show.  Marches around the stage, tells stories and just is a pro.  So worth your time and money.

James/Johnny Marr October 10, 2024  Orpheum Theater.
Johnny Marr is like Peter Hook.  WHO NEEDS THE OTHER FOLKS?  Marr is going to give you a few Smiths tunes to tease you enough but he just seems to enjoy being up there performing.  James is such a crazy underrated band in the US both in studio and live.  It seems like its been ages since they’ve toured the US.  I’d see either of these bands on their own, but put em together and don’t skimp on set length…take my money.

Show Highlight(s): Although they didn't play together it was such as solid night of music.  Tim Booth in the audience, the trumpet player in the balcony.  Marr just dishing out those "riffs".  It was so worth the time.  Marr is fast becoming a "can't miss" show for me and James always has been.

I set a new record for myself….at the start of the year I never thought I’d hit FORTY TWO (42) live shows this year.  For some it pales in comparison, for others its 42 more than they saw..i realize that.

I saw a lot of diverse acts but decided to share my favorite shows of the year.  I might at the end disclose the top 2-3 here they are in order only based off the month/date they occurred.  The cool part…EIGHT of them were seeing them for the first time.

1. U2 at (the)Sphere in Las Vegas.  A few months before this show went down, I looked in to it and could have got tickets but then wrestled with the “who will go, who will spend this $$, who will travel etc”.  A few weeks later I got a text from my oldest brother with simply “Pack your bags and figure it out”.  It was spectacular.  What an “experience”.  I was hardly in Vegas (few on a Friday evening, in uber back to airport Sunday at 730am Vegas time).  A friend went a few weeks before I went and wrote the line that I’ve stolen since “I hope your favorite band plays there”.  If you get a chance to go, it really is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced live.  The videos etc. hardly do it justice.  Figure out a way, and go.

2. The English Beat at the Met in Pawtucket April 4, 2024
I went to this show solo and stood at the side of the stage.  Very fun and tight band, Dave wearing loafers on stage just smiling ear to ear.  Hopefully we left an impression for them to come back.  Its always a walk down memory lane with them and its impossible to leave a show without having a smile on your face.

3. The New Mastersounds at Sinclair April 10, 2024 (1^st time)
I’ve been chasing this band for years it seems and finally saw them.  File them under can’t miss/won’t miss.  I knew I wanted to see them, glad I did and hopefully have fixed my missing em again issue.  Incredibly tight band. Fun to watch perform even though its not like they are bounding around the stage.  They find the groove, lock it down and get to it.

4. Swans at the Paradise May 14, 2024 (1^st time)

It was a packed Paradise, and I was off to the side.  I had read and heard of their live shows.  Michael Gira does sit for the shows but don’t let that fool you with what assault your ears will then be released to/with.  Six songs, but over two hours of music.  Swans can be a challenging listen and at times it was, but I also left feeling I had seen something really special and that doesn’t happen a ton.

Show Highlights: really one of those things you need to experience.  In reading I am not alone with that thought.

5. King Buffalo May 18, 2024 at the Middle East (Downstairs)

Huge huge HUGE fan of these guys.  They were part of a “festival” which kept their set to about 60 minutes, but they continue to be accessible to fans before and after the show.  I decided to brave it and head to about 3^rd person off the stage for most of the show (being tall I always feel bad, I really do).  I moved back.

6. A Place to Bury Strangers -May 29^th Alchemy Providence (1^st time)

Ho-lee smokes.  This was an undersold show.  Terrible for a band to come back perhaps but a huge win for the few that showed up.  They have long been heralded as “New York City’s Loudest band”.  They were freaking loud. The the jam in the center of the room made the evening even more special.  I 100% want to see them again.

Twenty years.

That is an impressive number. Especially when you are speaking of a band touring, recording, and performing. Adding a bit to this a genre that might not be commonly known. Those that are in the know, know that Caspian are, or should be, on the Mount Rushmore of post rock/instrumental bands.

The band announced they wanted to do a hometown 20 th anniversary show and it was held just this past weekend and for those that were in attendance, we all had many “moments”.

Fire Made Flesh began the evening of music, and we knew it was going to be special. Token “front man” Phil Jamieson welcomed us all and talked about how it was going to be an evening to celebrate and then launched in to “Of Foam and Wave”. A song they seemed to have put on the back burner for a little bit would be a fun trend for the evening. The song also had guitarist Jonny Ashburn and bassist Jani Zubkovs getting (and staying) wildly animated.

With the stage still dark an figure appeared to our right, it was Erin Burke Moran! The guitarist had left the band a few years earlier but was there tonight. They played a great version of RIoseco. It was nice to see Erin back on stage and the yelps from the audience and hugs on the stage resonated. Brombie followed and then we got yet another surprise. Behind the drum kit after 8 years (?!) was Joe Vickers.The band played a real rarity in “Loft”. Jamieson noted it was one of the fist songs they ever recorded and they are sure they played at their first show (in Beverly no less) 20 years prior. Vickers did not disappoint and seemed thrilled to be back behind the kit.

Gone in Bloom and Bough has taken a new approach at local shows since their show with the Orchestra a few years ago. Joe Arruda came out to play tenor saxophone through the last 1/3 of the song. It has grown more on me with each listen and its getting to be a really special moment to see and hear it in this form.

Enough funny business here comes “Arcs of Command”. A banger of bangers. The lights, the chaos, the guitars….its always something to behold.

We had to come down some after that and the band packed a huge gut punch when guitarist Calvin Joss took as seat, grabbed and acoustic guitar and performed CMF. CMF is the initials of former bassist Chris Friedrich. Friedrich passed suddenly back I 2013. In honor of Chris one of his bass guitars had a spotlight shone on it. It may have gotten dusty and after a few minutes the talkers seemed to realize something special was happening. Joss was able to perform the latter part of the song in silence.

The band returned for “Collapser” and then “Ghosts of the Garden City” (always a favorite) and when you hear the glockenspiel you know its about to get awesome. The transition to Flowers of the Light, from the bands most recent studio album “On Circles” was great to hear. Joss plays mandolin on this, but they resorted to a recorded track. Would have been cool to have Erin back to play, but we got him back soon enough as the band ended their main set with a long time closer “Sycamore”. If you’ve ever seen the band live you know when a show ends with this, it means business. The band actually stopped doing this as the closer, but it seems to be “back” and I think many are happy with that. The song ends with what is easiest to describe as a drum circle. Jon McMahon who toured with the band was on guitar behind Joss, Vickers and Burke Moran also came on stage for the “circle” the song builds and all members ditch their instruments to head to the drum kit for a bash session. It ends on the highest of high “THUMPS” and we, the audience exhale all at once. Its never ever not so totally worth it.

The band left the stage but came back for what replaced that “closer” for a number of years, “Castles High, Marble Bright. This for me, is their opus. I adore this song. Its got everything I love about the band and I love how it makes ME feel. It captures everything. I hope they never ever stop playing this live and it’s a perfect closer, even after the chaos of Sycamore.

Lights up, about 4 minutes short of 120 minutes run time. The audience filed out the exit and many, like me, wonder what is next?

One thing is for sure, we hope to be doing this again in 20 years!

The iconic American rock band Cheap Trick brought their legendary energy and timeless hits to the MGM Fenway in Boston on Saturday night, August 3, 2024. One of the newer venues in the shadows of Fenway Park was pretty darn full considering this band seems to never stop touring. 

From the moment Cheap Trick took the stage, it was clear that the band was ready to deliver an unforgettable show. Rick Nielsen, ever the charismatic showman, dazzled the audience with his trademark guitar riffs and eccentric collection of guitars. His playful banter and infectious enthusiasm set the tone for a night that was both celebratory and electric.

The setlist was a dream come true for longtime fans. The show kicked off with the classic opener "Hello There," immediately launching the crowd into a frenzy. Hits like "Surrender," "I Want You to Want Me," and "Dream Police" were met with roaring applause, and it was evident that every note was being savored by the enthusiastic crowd. Nielsen's guitar solos were as sharp as ever, and the chemistry between him and the rest of the band was palpable.

Zander's vocals were nothing short of stellar. Despite the passage of decades, his voice retains its youthful vigor and clarity, perfectly capturing the spirit of the band's classic hits. The crowd sang along with every word, creating a communal experience that was both nostalgic and exhilarating. Tom Petersson's bass work, especially on tracks like "California Man," provided a solid foundation for the band's dynamic performance, while Daxx Nielsen (son of Rick)drumming kept the energy high and the rhythms tight.

Visually, the show was a feast for the eyes. The stage setup featured vibrant, retro-inspired visuals that complemented the band's playful aesthetic. From the flashing lights to the bold graphics, the production added an extra layer of excitement to the performance without overshadowing the music.

As the night drew to a close, Cheap Trick treated the audience to an encore that included a rousing rendition of "Surrender," leaving the crowd buzzing and satisfied. It was clear that the band not only embraced their role as rock legends but also understood how to keep their performances fresh and engaging.

In a whirlwind of sonic intensity and raw emotion, A Place to Bury Strangers delivered a concert experience that was as mesmerizing as it was electrifying. Taking the stage at Alchemy, the Brooklyn-based trio unleashed a torrent of noise that enveloped the audience in a sonic maelstrom from the first chord to the last.

As the lights dimmed and the ominous hum of feedback filled the air, anticipation reached a fever pitch. Then, with explosive force, A Place to Bury Strangers erupted into their set, opening with "Disgust" plunging the crowd into a sonic abyss of shoegaze, post-punk, and noise rock.

Each member of the band brought a relentless energy and passion to their performance. Ackermann's guitar work was nothing short of mesmerizing, as he conjured an array of otherworldly sounds from his instrument, bending and distorting notes with ferocious intensity.

Songs like "Hold on Tight", "Keep Slipping Away" and "Ocean" (with Jay Space on drums) reverberated through the venue with an almost physical force, their pulsating rhythms and swirling layers of noise washing over the audience in waves.

But it wasn't just the music that captivated the crowd; it was the palpable sense of connection and catharsis that permeated the atmosphere. With each deafening crescendo and cathartic release, A Place to Bury Strangers seemed to tap into something primal and transcendent, uniting the audience in a shared experience of sonic immersion.

As the final notes faded into the ether, leaving nothing but ringing ears and racing hearts in their wake, it was clear that A Place to Bury Strangers had delivered a performance for the ages. With their uncompromising vision and boundless creativity, they proved once again why they're one of the most exhilarating live bands in the world today.

There is part of me that wants to write and write, but I don't think even the best writer could do this experience must justice.  You really do need to see something there to "get it".

U2 has been doing a 30th anniversary for Achtung Baby at the venue and yes, they did play the album in full but broke it in to two sections.  The first section ran from "Zoo Station" to "Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World".

At that point the band went to the "turntable" set.  This seems to run 4-5 songs on average and its really the spot where the setlist can be altered.  There is a lot that is set to the backdrop of the sphere so you get used to it.  On this night we had four songs.  "All I Want is You" still is a great live song, and the crowd singing at the end can bring chills.  A quick run through "Desire" was all fine and good.  Not a song I haven't heard before.  That lead to "Two new to me" songs.  The band played the b-side The Sweetest Thing (its a b-side to Where the Streets Have No Name if you were curious).  I cant recall ever hearing the song live.  Bono was fun and decided to play the keyboards as well. Then we got a cover of Don't Dream It's Over that was originally done by Crowded House  It was a pretty version with just Bono and Edge.

The full band returned for the last four songs on Achtung. 

Then we had the encore of six tunes.  Elevation was great and that went in to the bands newest song Atomic City  If you were not in to the visuals by this point you were thrown in to it full bore.  Feel free to poke around the internet to watch stuff (honestly thanks to the people that recorded but the people singing loudly and off key makes any footage I've seen tough to watch).  Streets and With or With Out You were remarkable.  During WoWoY I had that "moment".  I suddenly got it...all of it.  I wasn't tired, I wasn't scared, or sad...I just "was" and it was so perfect.  One of the most powerful few minutes of my live music journey.

Ended with Beautiful Day and I was really in no hurry to leave.  The venue wasn't pushing us out so we hung a little longer.

A friend wrote "I hope your favorite band plays the Sphere so you can experience this".  100% accurate.

I set a goal - A year of live shows.

 

For some reason, back in January of 2023 I had this random number of shows I hoped to attend in 2023.  It may not be lofty for some, but for others it could be a daunting task.  I decided on "28".  No real idea why.  

Happy to report that I hit that mark on Wednesday December 27th  when I hit Start Making Sense at the Sinclair in Cambridge.

I sat down to write this and despite my best efforts I kept hitting 27.  Counted again 27...again..27.  So I panicked.  Here I was thinking I was done (not that I ever pass up live shows really).  So I went in to over drive and found the show.  I will hit the mark!

Two early nineties bands were doing a co-headlining tour.  I headed to Big Night Live to catch the Charlatans UK with Ride.  Charlatans were the first band up and that was ok.  I am a casual fan of theirs, what I like I like but I never did a deep dive.  They were doing an album in full and then some other tunes so it was okay.  Ride was great.  They seem to get better each time I see them.

March

Jam band "Goose" had been getting some mixed reviews.  Seems like people loved them, or loved to hate them.  One really smart thing they do is they record their shows and upload to YouTube for example.  A random day at work might have 'last nights 2+ hour show" so I'd click and just minimize and listen.  I liked it.  A buddy helped me with an extra as the buzz is getting them out of the clubs and in to larger rooms.  This was at Roadrunner, which is one of my favorite venues in Boston.  It just has a LOT going for it for me. If a show is there I rarely hesitiate.  Goose was good, my first time seeing them and if continues to not be a hassle for tickets I will probably see them when I can.

April

The first show was sort of a fluke.  Canadian band Atsuko Chiba played at AS220 in Providence.  A few days before I saw a social media and and decided to click on it.  It was a good evening.  Small room, light attendance (bummer for band I realize) and a few handshakes.  Glad I "found them".  The next was a cover band called "Start Making Sense"  They are a Talking Heads tribute that seems to have eluded me in the past but they were playing note even 10 minutes from my home, so my wife and I went.  It was terrific.  Two really long sets with horns!  If you get the chance to see them, with the horns, don't hesitate.  Lastly was Father John Misty.  This was sort of a last minute decision as well.  A friend ended up with front row so I had to get some tickets (not in front row). Had a good evening both pre and post show with another old friend.

May:

Up first was Coheed and Cambria with Deatheaven at a very sold out Roadrunner in Boston.  Coheed is funny for me, I have all their studio releases but hadn't seen them live.  I went with a buddy that digs them and had seen them live so that was fun.  The second show was out in Worcester at the Palladium  This was Rival Sons, with the Record Company and a band called "Starcrawler"  Starcrawler did their best to get those that showed up early a good show.  Arrow De Wilde did a great job interacting with the audience and was a not stop ball of energy.  The guitarist (Henri Cash) did this crazy guitar solo on his custom three string guitar.  He then went for a walk up on to one of the crowes nests that looks over the stage, solo'd there too.  Once done he tossed his guitar down to the tech and headed to the merch stand. It was very unique. The Record Company was a pleasant surprise.  I knew one of their tunes (Life to Fix) and they were solid.  Rival Sons, for some reason fell a little flat for me at this show.  I still bought their two albums that came out this year and would see them again, but for some reason this show didn't blow my hair back like they had done previously.

June:

Up first was a band I had long waited to see again.  Elder played at Alchemy in Providence.  Small room small stage and a killer set.  File them under "Can't miss".  Saw the open for Earthless ages ago and it felt like they never toured the USA after (I was looking) but I'd end up seeing them twice this year.  Off to Boston for show #2 and that was the Pixies with Franz Ferdinand.  I had seen the Pixes support U2 back on the ZooTV tour but had sort of missed all the reunion shows.  They have some killer songs for sure but are not overly fun to watch perform.  Franz Ferdinand was a lot of fun, almost rowdy.  My friend had his teenage daughter with him and she ditched us old men to go hang out up front, which she did on the rail the whole show.  Bully was the first act on, caught the last song of a very very short set.  The last show of the month is/was The Four Horsemen, a Metallica tribute band based out of Ohio.  I am a casual fan of Metallica, I mean they are "ok" but its not typically something I race to track down to listen to.  It just happened I was free that night and they were great.  So much so I saw them again later in the year and if they continue to play these accessable venues and tickets remain reasonable enough, why not?

July:

Back to Alchemy for the Reverend Horton Heat.  I saw his name on the concert calendar when I saw Elder and decided to go (the beauty of free parking and venues 20 minutes from home) add to the evening.  Never had seen him, interesting show.  Ravenous fan base made it fun.  Next was the Jim Irsay experience.  I wrote about that one so check it out here.  What I'd say, if you can go...go.  It was free as well and just a different experience.  Up next was the first and only Caspian show of the year.  This was a support set to boot.  You go when you can go and they never ever fail live. Finally it was back to Roadrunner for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.  This was a killer show on about a 90 degree at 8pm kind of night.  This was a very very full venue but Isbell, once again is just electric live.  See him. (I still want to know where Amanda was though)

August

Oh boy, this was a doozy. Sigur Ros at the Boch Wang Theater with orchestra.  Even before the show I was telling myself "You are probably going to see a top 10 of all time" type show.  My goodness was that a correct assumption  I had front row baclcony which is perfect for this massive specatcle.  No crazy lights, or lazers etc...just music.  A friend on the socials wrong "There is beautiful music and then there is this.....".  Unreal show.  Just...wow.  I'll give it the show of the year award.

September:

Okay, this is where I got serious...at one point doing three shows in a row
The funny thing about the first one is it was yet another "tribute band". This time it was the Mahavishnu Project".  A tribute band for the Mahavishnu Orchestra.  This was a very lightly attended affair but my goodness there are some talented people among us. The power of live music and I admit I went in to this one sort of blind, not knowing a ton, but left looking to dive in more...which I have.  Changing gears was Black Tusk and Leather Lung at Alchemy.  Black Tusk had played the RPM Festival the same weekend and did a show in RI.  I had watched their stuff on YouTube and it was worth it.  Changing gears again, found myself at the site of a former state mental hospital for Buffalo Tom.  This was fun as there was some good friends there it was out doors on a decent enough day and it was over about 7pm.  Talk about checking off the boxes. Hope they do more at the site.  That was the first of the "three".  Next was out to Worcester to see godspeed you black emperor.  What was really great about this was my daughter had moved to the area so we got to spend some time with her, have dinner, my wife hung out there while I went to the show.  The last of the triple shot weekend was back to Roadrunner  for Mr. Bungle and Battles.  I have to admit about half way in to this show the "three in a row" was taking its toll.  I made it though.  A few weeks later it was Elder for the second time in the year.  This was at the Middle East Downstairs for a VERY sold out last night of the tour event.  REZN opened so it was cool to see them as I had heard a lot of buzz.  Wrapped up the month with Helmet down at the Met.  I got there late due to working but the 45 or so minutes was great.  My buddy took his teenager (same buddy but different teenager) and he got some picks, the setlist (which eventually got signed) and Page Hamilton came out to talk to him.  Killer night and some great memories made.

October:

Roadrunner hosted Explosions in the Sky right at the start of the month.  Touring for "The End" we are left to know what it all was.  I don't think its the end, but if it was they were spectacular as always.  A few nights later it was to the Paradise to see Belly.  They were a lot of fun and my buddy mentioned to keep my eye on bassist Gail Greenwood.  She was hard to miss and so fun to watch.  Another cover band came mid month, this time with Smells like Nirvana.  I actually got free tickets for this when I was at Helmet.  They were fun and it was neat to take a stroll down memory lane.  The band also was sure to note "We are not here to replace anyone, but continue to play/share their music".

King Buffalo with Handsome Jack at Fete in Rhode Island - King Buffalo is probably my most played band on streaming.  I am always asking you know who to stream music by.....  It was great to see them in a small room and Handsome Jack did a lot to impress.

The Four Horsemen with   at the Met in Pawtucket RI.  - This was the second time I saw the band.  A lot sort of fell in to place with this one.  It was a Saturday, I didn't have other commitments that evening (and it helped me hit 28).  I am a casual Metallica fan, but these guys are a lot of fun.  I am not sure I'd go super far to see them, but if they continue to play in my area I'll probably continue to go.
