I already have tickets for Peter Hook and the Light at the start of the month and Pearl Jam mid month. Recently added over the last few days include PJ Harvey as well as a co-bill featuring The National with The War on Drugs

More to come I'll bet....
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14938065.post-73787332697335570572024-02-26T16:32:00.000-05:002024-02-26T16:32:03.175-05:00A very quick rant...
Recently an acquaintance posted on social media that their birthday was coming up. You really do need to see something there to "get it".

U2 has been doing a 30th anniversary for Achtung Baby at the venue and yes, they did play the album in full but broke it in to two sections. The first section ran from "Zoo Station" to "Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World".

At that point the band went to the "turntable" set. This seems to run 4-5 songs on average and its really the spot where the setlist can be altered. There is a lot that is set to the backdrop of the sphere so you get used to it. On this night we had four songs. "All I Want is You" still is a great live song, and the crowd singing at the end can bring chills. A quick run through "Desire" was all fine and good. Not a song I haven't heard before. That lead to "Two new to me" songs. The band played the b-side The Sweetest Thing (its a b-side to Where the Streets Have No Name if you were curious). I cant recall ever hearing the song live. Bono was fun and decided to play the keyboards as well. Then we got a cover of Don't Dream It's Over that was originally done by Crowded House It was a pretty version with just Bono and Edge.

The full band returned for the last four songs on Achtung.

Then we had the encore of six tunes. Elevation was great and that went in to the bands newest song Atomic City If you were not in to the visuals by this point you were thrown in to it full bore. Feel free to poke around the internet to watch stuff (honestly thanks to the people that recorded but the people singing loudly and off key makes any footage I've seen tough to watch). Streets and With or With Out You were remarkable. During WoWoY I had that "moment". I suddenly got it...all of it. I wasn't tired, I wasn't scared, or sad...I just "was" and it was so perfect. One of the most powerful few minutes of my live music journey.

Ended with Beautiful Day and I was really in no hurry to leave. The venue wasn't pushing us out so we hung a little longer.

A friend wrote "I hope your favorite band plays the Sphere so you can experience this". 100% accurate.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14938065.post-62557725728236210262024-02-09T01:30:00.001-05:002024-02-09T01:30:00.162-05:00Post Festivcal 2024
Let this soak in....

Ho-lee....
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14938065.post-6123945810865442132024-02-07T12:59:00.002-05:002024-02-07T12:59:47.750-05:00Incoming....
I was able to get out to Las Vegas to see U2 at the Sphere.

Trying to figure out a way to put thoughts on "paper" that will relay how incredible the experience was.

It's coming....
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14938065.post-45548189192448953802024-01-19T10:02:00.002-05:002024-01-19T10:02:14.375-05:00New SLIFT!

We have waited seemingly for ages for this! It may not be lofty for some, but for others it could be a daunting task. I decided on "28". No real idea why.

Happy to report that I hit that mark on Wednesday December 27th when I hit Start Making Sense at the Sinclair in Cambridge.

I sat down to write this and despite my best efforts I kept hitting 27. Counted again 27...again..27. So I panicked. Here I was thinking I was done (not that I ever pass up live shows really). So I went in to over drive and found the show. I will hit the mark!

If you really are curious, and I think I am doing this more for me, have a look at how it went.

January:
Shows attended: Zero (I better get cracking!)

February:
Shows Attended: 1
Two early nineties bands were doing a co-headlining tour. I headed to Big Night Live to catch the Charlatans UK with Ride. Charlatans were the first band up and that was ok. I am a casual fan of theirs, what I like I like but I never did a deep dive. They were doing an album in full and then some other tunes so it was okay. Ride was great. They seem to get better each time I see them.

March
Shows Attended: 1 (man I need to pick it up!)
Jam band "Goose" had been getting some mixed reviews. Seems like people loved them, or loved to hate them. One really smart thing they do is they record their shows and upload to YouTube for example. A random day at work might have 'last nights 2+ hour show" so I'd click and just minimize and listen. I liked it. A buddy helped me with an extra as the buzz is getting them out of the clubs and in to larger rooms. This was at Roadrunner, which is one of my favorite venues in Boston. It just has a LOT going for it for me. If a show is there I rarely hesitiate. Goose was good, my first time seeing them and if continues to not be a hassle for tickets I will probably see them when I can.

April
Shows attended - 3
The first show was sort of a fluke. Canadian band Atsuko Chiba played at AS220 in Providence. A few days before I saw a social media and and decided to click on it. It was a good evening. Small room, light attendance (bummer for band I realize) and a few handshakes. Glad I "found them". The next was a cover band called "Start Making Sense" They are a Talking Heads tribute that seems to have eluded me in the past but they were playing note even 10 minutes from my home, so my wife and I went. It was terrific. Two really long sets with horns! If you get the chance to see them, with the horns, don't hesitate. Lastly was Father John Misty. This was sort of a last minute decision as well. A friend ended up with front row so I had to get some tickets (not in front row). Had a good evening both pre and post show with another old friend.

May:
Shows attended - 2
Up first was Coheed and Cambria with Deatheaven at a very sold out Roadrunner in Boston. Coheed is funny for me, I have all their studio releases but hadn't seen them live. I went with a buddy that digs them and had seen them live so that was fun. The second show was out in Worcester at the Palladium This was Rival Sons, with the Record Company and a band called "Starcrawler" Starcrawler did their best to get those that showed up early a good show. Arrow De Wilde did a great job interacting with the audience and was a not stop ball of energy. The guitarist (Henri Cash) did this crazy guitar solo on his custom three string guitar. He then went for a walk up on to one of the crowes nests that looks over the stage, solo'd there too. Once done he tossed his guitar down to the tech and headed to the merch stand. It was very unique. The Record Company was a pleasant surprise. I knew one of their tunes (Life to Fix) and they were solid. Rival Sons, for some reason fell a little flat for me at this show. I still bought their two albums that came out this year and would see them again, but for some reason this show didn't blow my hair back like they had done previously.

June:
Shows Attended - 3
Up first was a band I had long waited to see again. Elder played at Alchemy in Providence. Small room small stage and a killer set. File them under "Can't miss". Saw the open for Earthless ages ago and it felt like they never toured the USA after (I was looking) but I'd end up seeing them twice this year. Off to Boston for show #2 and that was the Pixies with Franz Ferdinand. I had seen the Pixes support U2 back on the ZooTV tour but had sort of missed all the reunion shows. They have some killer songs for sure but are not overly fun to watch perform. Franz Ferdinand was a lot of fun, almost rowdy. My friend had his teenage daughter with him and she ditched us old men to go hang out up front, which she did on the rail the whole show. Bully was the first act on, caught the last song of a very very short set. The last show of the month is/was The Four Horsemen, a Metallica tribute band based out of Ohio. I am a casual fan of Metallica, I mean they are "ok" but its not typically something I race to track down to listen to. It just happened I was free that night and they were great. So much so I saw them again later in the year and if they continue to play these accessable venues and tickets remain reasonable enough, why not?

July:
Shows Attended 4
Back to Alchemy for the Reverend Horton Heat. I saw his name on the concert calendar when I saw Elder and decided to go (the beauty of free parking and venues 20 minutes from home) add to the evening. Never had seen him, interesting show. Ravenous fan base made it fun. Next was the Jim Irsay experience. I wrote about that one so check it out here. What I'd say, if you can go...go. It was free as well and just a different experience. Up next was the first and only Caspian show of the year. This was a support set to boot. You go when you can go and they never ever fail live. Finally it was back to Roadrunner for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. This was a killer show on about a 90 degree at 8pm kind of night. This was a very very full venue but Isbell, once again is just electric live. See him. (I still want to know where Amanda was though)

August
Shows Attended 1
Oh boy, this was a doozy. Sigur Ros at the Boch Wang Theater with orchestra. Even before the show I was telling myself "You are probably going to see a top 10 of all time" type show. My goodness was that a correct assumption I had front row baclcony which is perfect for this massive specatcle. No crazy lights, or lazers etc...just music. A friend on the socials wrong "There is beautiful music and then there is this.....". Unreal show. Just...wow. I'll give it the show of the year award.

September:
Shows Attended 7
Okay, this is where I got serious...at one point doing three shows in a row
The funny thing about the first one is it was yet another "tribute band". This time it was the Mahavishnu Project". A tribute band for the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This was a very lightly attended affair but my goodness there are some talented people among us. The power of live music and I admit I went in to this one sort of blind, not knowing a ton, but left looking to dive in more...which I have. Changing gears was Black Tusk and Leather Lung at Alchemy. Black Tusk had played the RPM Festival the same weekend and did a show in RI. I had watched their stuff on YouTube and it was worth it. Changing gears again, found myself at the site of a former state mental hospital for Buffalo Tom. This was fun as there was some good friends there it was out doors on a decent enough day and it was over about 7pm. Talk about checking off the boxes. Hope they do more at the site. That was the first of the "three". Next was out to Worcester to see godspeed you black emperor. What was really great about this was my daughter had moved to the area so we got to spend some time with her, have dinner, my wife hung out there while I went to the show. The last of the triple shot weekend was back to Roadrunner for Mr. Bungle and Battles. I have to admit about half way in to this show the "three in a row" was taking its toll. I made it though. A few weeks later it was Elder for the second time in the year. This was at the Middle East Downstairs for a VERY sold out last night of the tour event. REZN opened so it was cool to see them as I had heard a lot of buzz. Wrapped up the month with Helmet down at the Met. I got there late due to working but the 45 or so minutes was great. My buddy took his teenager (same buddy but different teenager) and he got some picks, the setlist (which eventually got signed) and Page Hamilton came out to talk to him. Killer night and some great memories made.

October:
Shows Attended 3

Roadrunner hosted Explosions in the Sky right at the start of the month. Touring for "The End" we are left to know what it all was. I don't think its the end, but if it was they were spectacular as always. A few nights later it was to the Paradise to see Belly. They were a lot of fun and my buddy mentioned to keep my eye on bassist Gail Greenwood. She was hard to miss and so fun to watch. Another cover band came mid month, this time with Smells like Nirvana. I actually got free tickets for this when I was at Helmet. They were fun and it was neat to take a stroll down memory lane. The band also was sure to note "We are not here to replace anyone, but continue to play/share their music".

November:
Shows attended: 0

December:
Shows Attended: 3

King Buffalo with Handsome Jack at Fete in Rhode Island - King Buffalo is probably my most played band on streaming. I am always asking you know who to stream music by..... It was great to see them in a small room and Handsome Jack did a lot to impress.

The Four Horsemen with at the Met in Pawtucket RI. - This was the second time I saw the band. A lot sort of fell in to place with this one. It was a Saturday, I didn't have other commitments that evening (and it helped me hit 28). I am a casual Metallica fan, but these guys are a lot of fun. I am not sure I'd go super far to see them, but if they continue to play in my area I'll probably continue to go.

The last was Start Making Sense just last night (12/27)

I

DID

IT!!!!

What should be the goal for next year? The band would arrive on stage about 8:15 and play until close to 11:15. It was impressive.

Now, who are these “All Stars”. Well that list in and of itself is impressive. For me the big draw was Mike Mills, the bassist from R.E.M. Just to see him perform again was enough to pique my interest. Kenny Wayne Shepherd was another big name (guitar) and Kenny Arnoff (drums). At one point there was FOURTEEN people on stage. It worked. I’ll break things down a little more

Now with the show its probably easier to cheat and share some moments. You can see the set list here:

The show opened with Irsay seated and they performed “Lawyers Guns and Money” by Warren Zevon and Stuck inside of Moblie With the Mephis Blues Again by Bob Dylan. After that Irsay left the stage for a while to let the band play.

Mike Mills did two songs. (Don’t got Back to) Rockville” and “Superman”. That was a thrill for me personally. Kenny Wayne Shepherd then had his turn. I will be honest and say I don’t know a ton about him. When I worked in Boston Radio for a few years we played him but I had never seen him live. He did “Blue on Black” which I knew and he is just an incredible guitar player. He piqued my interest to make and effort to see him when he tours and seek out more of his material.

A bit later Irsay returned and introduced some New England Patriots players and Indianapolis Colts players. They tossed out some autographed hats and the music continued.

The latter part of the show is when the three “big” guests performed. The first was Vince Gill. I admit I know zero about him (other than his name). He was good. Funny too. He started off “Do we have any country music fans” and he got the cheers and he said “Well that’s could because this was gonna be a long 30 minutes otherwise”. He is a good guitar player!

Gill wrapped up and introduced Kevin Cronin from Reo Speedwagon. He jumped right in. He was all smiles and complimentary to the band and Irsay. As he wrapped up he told the story about how they had opened for J.Gelis at the garden and was excited to see Peter Wolf.

Wolf, who is 77, took the stage and didn’t stop moving. I honestly going in was sorta “ehh” but he did a ton to impress. He’s earned it for sure, and I left with a different opinion.

Irsay returned and the band did two songs from Pink Floyd. The big one was “Comfortably Numb” where Shepherd used David Gilmours black Fender Strat (that Irsay won in an auction for 3.9 Million dollars) and he really made it is own.

For "free" you really can't go wrong.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14938065.post-38279323384434593932023-07-03T10:33:00.003-04:002023-07-03T10:33:24.020-04:00The Baseball Project, Album and Tour (Sinclair in August!)

We have some great news! Live show season is moving along. I have a goal of hitting 28 shows this year. High number by some, low for others...but I think I can do it even with all that is going on.

A few weeks ago I saw the band Start Making Sense. They are band that celebrates the music of The Talking Heads and David Byrne They were senstational, and being less than 10 minutes from home (Free parking etc) made it even better. I suggest you check them out if you can.

Tomorrow I head to see Father John Misty. It is odd for me to say (and not to be arrogant at all) but I've never seen him live. Hoping for a great evening.

More to come...FJM will make 4 of 28.

Bought tickets for a few things, hoping to remain healthy and safe so I can attend!

If you care, I made it!
read about it here
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14938065.post-84910139700896081892023-02-19T08:26:00.001-05:002023-02-19T08:26:00.195-05:00New Band Alert! Friday December 30, 2022

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">12 Annual with a few gaps in between might not
have looked as good on the marquee or the poster, but we shall explain.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Caspian has/had been a part of a show (sometimes headlining, sometimes not) to
say goodbye to the year. It became a great tradition, often having
special moments to make it all worthwhile.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">In the late fall the band announced via twitter something along the lines of
"What do you think about bringing it back". Of course, fans
were elated and of course it came together.

One of my favorite things about seeing Caspian live is how I've come to know
more and more people. Connecting with them online and of course at
shows. By the time the band hit the stage Friday night there were 17 of
us that had all greeted one another with hi-fives and hugs and
howareya's. It’s like a class reunion meets a birthday meets a live show
experience.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">I/we arrived in waves and honestly spent much of
the early parts of the evening in the lobby of the venue. Having a drink,
a laugh, checking out the merch. As Junius wrapped up many of us made our
way to "the spot". I am taller, I am aware of it, so I like to
be close, but off to the side some. Sinclair has that spot just for me.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Taking the stage about 10:30 the band began with
a sit down version of Nagoya. It was a slow build with Jani (bass) not
even on the stage until the later parts. Rioseco followed. A song the
band seems to play fairly often, again it’s a quieter, mellower tune than one
might expect from Caspian, but no less beautiful.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Then it began.

Arcs of Command followed. This is an absolute live banger. They
should never ever pull this from their set. It’s a song they could open
with or close with. It just is that solid and to me it shows what the
band is capable of. Cal, Jonny and Jani flail around the stage and Phil
compliments that right in the middle. It’s some of the most chaotic few
minutes of your life. Collapser followed and the first bust out was
Moksha got dusted off (after many years) and that was met with a thunderous
ovation at the start AND end.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Gone in Bloom and Bough is always a mixed bag for me personally. I like
the song but it always takes me, for some reason, to "get there" with
the band. The last few times I've seen them perform this they've had a local
sax player, John Aruda, play with them. The layer he adds is just off the
chart. We are getting spoiled.

Halls of the Summer and then another not so common "Ghosts of the Garden
City". Heck, we got the glockenspiel twice in one night!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">The evening ended with much celebration and the always epic "Castles High,
Marble Bright". A song that fits EVERY single mood for me. It’s
an amazing song, amazing closer.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">The band waived, said their thank you's and off
they went. It will be some time I bet as the cycle for the last album
"On Circles" celebrates its three year anniversary already,
Hopefully the band takes some time, and perhaps later in the year gets together

"What are you doing tomorrow?" In looking I had nothing, which not to sound arrogant, is sort of a rarity, especially during hockey season.

"Nothing" was my response followed with the "Whats up?".

My friend had an extra for A Day To Remember and wanted to know if I would be interested.

Full disclosure, I know next to nothing on the band, Couldn't name a song if I had to type deal. I was available, hand't seen my friend in some time and it was live music, so why not?

We arrived to the Orpheum Theater shortly after Wage War took the stage. Oh, I should have added this is an "acoustic" tour so that means really most of the band members sit down when they play and lean more on their acousitc guitars, but everything is amp'd up regardless.

Wage War was fine. Fitting right in with the vibe of the room and enjoying the unique experience of seeing a band this way. They played about 45 minutes and were excited to have had the chance.

A Day to Remember followed. The band, from Florida, has a core of four guys but added three more for the gig to fill things out.

I will admit I was very much entertained. The band has been performing for 19 years (20th in 2023) and they are prolfic, sound good and are engaged with the audience,

The audience remained seated for the bulk of the show, but fans were losing their minds throughout. That is one of my favorite parts. Not that odd way of people watching, but seeing people just so over taken by the music and atmosphere they just cut loose. I'd like to see a full electric show of theirs and have to admit the songs did "work" acoustic if that makes sense.

Here is the setlist if you are interested:

Mindreader
City of Ocala

The Downfall of Us All
I'm Already Gone

Rescue Me

Degenerates

Everything We Need

Good Things
Only Money

I'm Made of Wax, Larry, What are you Made of?
Resentment
F.Y.M

Hot Topic (Fuck You Kyle)*

I Surrender
End of Me
Leave the Lights On
All Sings Point to Launderdale

Encore:
Looks Like Hell

If It Means a Lot to You
Right Back at It Again

* Song was made up on the spot where the band was singing about working at Hot Topic and Kyle being a bad manager

Doors were 7

Wage War 8-845
A Day to Remember 915-1045

I'd go again for sure. I will add that the show was about ¾ full/capacity.

The MGM was built on a corner lot in the shadows of Fenway Park. It’s a unique footprint, basically a triangle lot space they used to their benefit.

The line outside was the usual you’d expect checking IDs, I’d say we waited less than 5 minutes. Once inside there were metal detectors and it opened into the main lobby.

The main lobby had stairs on the left and right. (2 stores above). Directly as you walked in was a bar and there was a bit of congestion. The floor entrance was to the left and right of the bar and there was the merch to the right.

Took the stairs up and there are restrooms on that level, and entrances into the “first balcony area”.

Overlooking the street is a “club”. I can’t fully remember the name, but what you’d expect looking in. Couches, a private bar (and maybe a restroom?) For an upcharge I am sure. I am sure I’d go in there if allowed, but I wasn’t aware of it.

I had 2nd balcony seats so up we went. Above the “club” was an open-air space. This is nice. Bar seats/tables etc. Someone noted, “it won’t be long before they make this an exclusive VIP experience so enjoy it while you can”. I hope they don’t change that though. It’s nice to just “step outside” for a few, and get a drink if that is your thing. Decent enough views etc.

Once in the venue, I noticed right away there were rows of seats at the back of each section. Single bar stool height (with backs) and a table. The view, although “far back” wasn’t terrible. An option for sure if you wanted to go for the music. The balcony is steep. That is a good thing. We were in row D and my knees were basically at the person’s head in front of me. With that, very few people stood during the show. I can see that being mixed depending on the act.

The seats did have cup holders but I found them to be a tad tight. Tough to get out of the row if you needed to without everyone standing up.

I will say that from the balcony there didn’t seem to be a bad seat. The two “closest to the stage” sections on the sides might pose a slight challenge sight wise but otherwise, I’d say the vast majority of level 3 seemed “suitable”.

In between acts I did go for a walk. There are 2-3 bars (at least) per level and I noticed some other neat seat options (probably more $$) to the front of the lower balcony.

I was not able to get onto the floor, but the floor was as expected from where I could tell. Fully General Admission. I am slated to go back in November and do have a floor for that.

Overall I liked it.

Pros: Sightlines seemed pretty much perfect regardless of location. The sound was good and the outdoor space was great.

Cons: Seats a “little” tight. Bathroom congestion off the lobby.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14938065.post-70428369858885500962022-09-10T10:23:00.002-04:002023-04-19T11:24:31.847-04:00Tom Jones in Boston

Here is something I am not sure I'd ever thought to be possible. of late. I am not a person that says they
hate it. Contrary I do enjoy a good Facebook/twitter
scroll. I take most things with a grain
of salt and sort of leave people alone that I don’t agree with. I have so few followers I can’t afford to
block anyone!

Since the start of the year, I’ve been making some changes
personally. I’ve been having body issues
for a few years now. Quietly, it seems.
I am not super keen on wearing a bathing suit for example. Despite me being visually impaired without my
glasses I think it’s a quiet relief I can’t see people looking at me. I know talk about vanity “looking at you”
etc. Dunno its hard to describe. I’ve been a “bigger” guy for a long time. I recall speaking with my doctor about it
once and he said “perhaps this is YOUR weight” meaning if you go up and down a
few lbs. here and there that’s “normal” but you’ve been in the same area for XX
years. I am paraphrasing of course; the
MD does make suggestions to get my weight down and be smart with
food/exercise. Another way to put it, I’ve
been the same shirt/pant size for probably 10+ years.

At the start of this month, I think the pandemic finally hit
me. I had been trying to keep things “normal”
for me. For example, I chose to keep
going into the office. I didn’t
mind. My commute is not bad, and I
really liked to separate “work” from “home”.
So, for the two years I’d work here and there at home “just because”.

I was in the middle of an early morning training and
suddenly I got confused. I had covered
what I needed to cover 100’s of times before.
Suddenly I felt out of place. I
knew what I needed to say/ how I needed to say it..but I couldn’t. Frantic I messaged a co-worker and said, “can
you cover for me for a few minutes”.

2 years of trying to be “strong” I think finally got me.

After an MD visit that day and a few days off I was back at it.

Sense of purpose re-stored?

Anyhow, even before my “episode” I wanted to improve myself.
(let’s get back to that second paragraph).
I wanted to come up with some cheesy hash tag and have a big weight loss
before my birthday this summer. First
issue is I have no “picture of me before” (again, body issue??) After an interesting new year eve, I decided
I wanted to try “Dry January”. In that I
was not going to drink alcohol.

I like to drink.
There I said it. I like beer and
having beers (notice the plural).
Sitting on a patio in summer with a beer…I could do that every day. I am also grateful that I could always
control my drinking in that I never missed work, hit anyone etc. New Years Eve (I was home) I over did it
though. New Years day was basically “lost”. I was drunk in front of my kids, hungover in
front of my family. It was embarrassing.

I made it through and into February. As of this post I think I’ve only had 2-3
beers…tops. Its odd I almost get “full” ½
way through one. I don’t want to finish
them.

I went out with some co-workers this past week and did have
a few. Even though it was a challenge to
“keep up” like I used to. This could be
a good thing.

On top of the “improvement” I had asked for a few books for
Christmas. I have never been a prolific
reader. Matter of fact I can’t say I disliked
reading, but I didn’t find pleasure in it.
I had asked for three books, got all three and as of this typing have completed
two of them.

I had a goal to read a book per month I guess, and now two
months in starting (some 80 pages in) my third I think this is a goal.

Have an idea for a double challenge in March. Like most changes and challenges it will be
that..at first.

I’m seeing results in my appearance and like where this is
going.

Going to add blogging into a March challenge as well.

For whatever
reason. Its been a few since I've put fingers to keyboard on my favorite
records of the year.

The pandemic slowed a lot of things down. I still bought music and
decided I wanted to put down some thoughts.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Top 6 in No Order:

King Buffalo – The Burden of Restlessness – If there was an award for
the most spun album of the year for me it is this one. Its great from top to bottom and I have no
idea why its not on many/any “best of lists”.
This NY Trio nailed it. Stand out
track for me is “Hebetation”. Just
enough effects on the guitar/bass for the spacy vibe, coupled with a very unique
timing on the drums. If you like early Smashing Pumpkins (Gish era) you should dig
in. Around 3:08 when the guitar goes into
overdrive especially.
Hebetation

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – G_D’s Pee AT STATE’S END!
This band comes around every few years, drops a record, tours and then disappears.
We lucked out with one of those happening this year. The track “Government Came” is in a series of
movements, per GS!YBE mantra, but they are so very good at it. Once again, it’s a “payoff” track. I never tire of it…ever.
Government Came

Mogwai – As The Love Continues

<span style="font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Perrenial favorites of mine. Always worth my
time. Always, Nailed it
Honestly if you don’t like “Ceiling Granny” I am not sure what else I can tell
you.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

Ceiling Granny

<span style="font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Hopefully I’ll see this tune at the Paradise in
2022. In the meantime, play this as loud as you
can. Seriously.

The War on Drugs – I Don’t Live Here Anymore
Its amazing we are now 5 records in with these guys as we are slowly seeing
them more and more. I get to capture these moments (hopefully) end of
January. This band is really something that honestly needs your
attention
I Don't Live Here Anymore

<span style="font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 12pt;">
Another fun track to check out from them is really any live version of “Eyes to
the Wind”, If you ever want to see a band locked in, and a drummer
having the time of his life I emplore you to check this out, and once the
saxophone solo comes…you should understand why this band is important. It
really is magic from 4:00 on IMO…
Eyes to the Wind Live

<span style="font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Turnstile<span style="font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> – Glow On
This is not for everyone. Tagged as a punk/hardcore band they
released a wildly critically acclaimed record. The first track called “Mystery”
sets the tone. I share with you a live video of them for the sole
reason of the energy of the crowd (and wild enthusiasm) one day I hope we can
see live shows and allow people collectively to cut loose. I can’t
watch this video and not smile (and kudos to the ladies down front for holding
it down!)
Live in Oxnard California

Studio version of “Mystery” here

<span style="font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 12pt;">
Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio – I Told You So<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 12pt;">If you checked out anything on this list so far, this is so far
off what else is on said short list. I can’t figure out a single thing to not
love about these guys. I can’t put a single track because they all have their
moments:
The Whole Album!

Also, after you check that out…check out this older sessison…and as you are
watching this..its just them “waming up” …for 18 minutes.
KEXP Warmup

<span style="font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 12pt;">
So happy I discovered
Electric Moon – Holy smokes. There is so much to go with here. If
you watch any of their live shows that will do, but this clip has been in
constant rotation. Its an older clip of a tune called “Theory of
Mind”. As it starts, you might be like “meh”. Honestly, give
yourself some time. Once they hit about the 6 minute mark you will
be thinking..hmmm okay…then when the main riff drops at
9:24,,,,sweet jesus!!!
Theory of Mind - Live

<span style="font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 12pt;">
Eats Batteries – Just bass and drums…and it rips. I mean the first
tune on the albums is called “Nightmare on Ed Helms Street” for god sake…
The Whole Album!
Its been a tough few years, and the holidays can always be a "mixed bag" for sure. Part of you longs for "normalcy" while the other part is totally fine you don't need to hang aroung with (insert persons here) during the holday.

As tradition goes around my home we decided to send a holiday card. Even with my kids both late teens and early 20's we decided to send a photo card with an image of each child during a milestone moment in their lives. We chose a template, uploaded the photos, made edits, ordered them, ordered stamps, printed labels and then sent them off.

Close to 70 have been sent.

So far in return, at last count at least....16.

Now I get it. Its not supposed to be like that and its the "thought that counts" etc. I also understand most folks are on social media of some sort so I sorta know whats up with them, their kids etc.

Many of the returns are from my parents friends for example. I don't have a huge family but only have a card from 2 cousins, neither of which i've seen in many years (mostly due to our living locations). Its great to hear from them.

Is it a generational thing? My mom recently told me that one of the Aunts I had sent a card to was "thrilled" that they got a card. See, that is what I feel. YAY ITS NOT A BILL IN THE MAIL!!

Kudos to those who write in them, on them etc. I should step up my game.

With all that I'm sorta wanting to send even MORE next year. Maybe a "generic" card (no images of my kids).

Lost art? Antiquated?

Do people like them?

I actually love the letters too. Might do one of them!

Seasons Greetings to you All.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14938065.post-42508415533464635402021-10-03T20:10:00.000-04:002021-10-03T20:10:08.745-04:00Fall is in the air
Well I had hoped to do some updating but I've been lazy or something. I went to a concert for the first time in 20 months. I think I will do a write up on that.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14938065.post-72268115117589155252021-03-04T20:13:00.000-05:002021-03-04T20:13:02.888-05:00Hello
I've been thinking about dusting this off.

I'm not overly opinionated on Facebook as why "spam" folks. (I mostly post jokes and band links) but this might be better suited for what I think I want to do "socially". Going to clean things up. Heck zero hits, whatever. I had someone comment on a post I did in 2006 just the other day...so...someone, somewhere is reading!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
